A school bus driver has been charged with several counts of DWI after an accident this morning left several students with minor injuries.
According to a statement from Toms River police, police units were dispatched to 1299 Old Freehold Road, Ocean County Vocational Technical School, for a report of a motor vehicle accident at about 7:30 Monday morning.
Lacey Twp. bus driver Cheryl Rooth, 57 of Whiting, was pulling into the OCVTS parking lot to drop off students, Toms River police spokeswoman Jillian Messina said. As she pulled behind another bus to drop off her students she did not stop in time and struck the rear of the unoccupied bus parked in front of her.
There were 28 students on Ms. Rooth’s bus at the time of the accident, 8 students suffered minor injuries, 3 of the students were juveniles.
Although Ms. Rooth was not under the influence of alcohol, she was allegedly under the influence of prescription medication and charged with DWI, DWI in a School Zone, DWI through a school crossing, and DWI with a minor in the vehicle.
The accident is being investigated by Toms River Traffic Safety officer Robert Westfall.
