Former NJ-04 Democratic congressional candidate Josh Welle says he will not seek the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 13th district, according to a report from More Monmouth Musings.
In a podcast published last week, Welle, a retired Navy officer, said that if he runs for election again it will likely be for a national office and that it would likely be in 4-6 years.
By waiting 4-6 years before running again for national office, Welle is calculating that he could not win a rematch against Congressman Smith in a presidential year, the report noted.
House district lines will be redrawn after the 2020 census, in time for the 2022 election.
Welle told the NJGlobe in December that he was considering a run for State Assembly in the 13th district to replace retiring Assemblywoman Amy Handlin.
Rep. Smith, whose district includes Lakewood, has won twenty elections since he unseated thirteen-term Democratic Rep. Frank Thompson in 1980.
In November, Smith defeated Welle by 12 points, 55.4% to 43.1%, despite Welle raising $1.8 million.
