As reported, The New Jersey Legislature approved the bill known as the “Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act,” which would allow doctors to write a lethal prescription for terminally ill patients who want to end their lives.

Governor Murphy released a statement saying:

“This measure is about dignity. Senator Scutari and Assemblyman Burzichelli should be commended for sponsoring this bill that will make us a more dignified and empathetic state. For Assemblyman Burzichelli, in particular, with whom I have met to discuss this issue, this bill has been a personal fight for years.

“Allowing terminally ill and dying residents the dignity to make end-of-life decisions according to their own consciences is the right thing to do. I look forward to signing this legislation into law.”

Agudas Yisroel, which has a division focused on end-of-life decisions called ‘chayim aruchim,’ said in a statement “We have testified and met legislators over several years on this subject…and we are deeply disappointed at today’s votes. Our hope is that the governor may still veto the bill when it comes to his desk, and we urge him to do so.”
