The library in Highland Park, NJ, canceled a hearing scheduled for Wednesday on whether it should host a public reading of the children’s book “P is for Palestine,” citing citizen safety and crowd control concerns.

Haaretz reports In a compromise decision, the library said it would be scheduling a new date for the “P is for Palestine” event, including a talk with author Dr Golbarg Bashi, and also arranging a program around the book “I is for Israel” — by Gili Bar-Hillel and Prodeepta Das — as soon as possible.

Critics of “P is for Palestine” took particular issue with a two-page illustrated spread that reads: “I is for Intifada, Intifada is Arabic for rising up for what is right, if you are a kid or a grown-up!” Critics said the pages glorified the violent Palestinian uprisings in the late 1980s and early 2000s and constitute a “call for violence and terrorism.”

TONIGHT the JEWISH COMMUNITY should be very proud of those who spoke out with great eloquence at the Highland Park COUNCIL meeting regarding P IS FOR Palestine. All WERE GREATLY PREPARED and spoke with vigor. OUR UNITY WAS VERY OBVIOUS.
I BELIEVE THIS MEETING HAS CONVINCED THE HIGHLAND PARK COUNCIL THEY MUST PERSUADE THE LIBRARY BOARD TO CANCEL THE READING OF P IS FOR PALESTINE.. I TAKE THE MAYOR AT HER WORD WHEN SHE SAID THEY WERE NOT AFRAID OF A LAW SUIT. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP. RABBI DR. BERNHARD ROSENBERG

  2. I told the HIGHLAND PARK COUNCIL, I would be at the event if she speaks and would join in a protest outside the library and then go in while she is speaking, take notes and tape her if possible. Because of severe back problems I will be there in a wheel chair if needed and with a cane , I openly told them I would take a bullet to stop this event. Never again means never again.
