New Jersey Forest Fire Now Fully Contained

Fire officials said Monday morning that the forest fire which burned 11,638 acres in Penn State Forest in Burlington County over the weekend, is now 100 percent contained.

Authorities say the fire whipped by high winds spread over thousands of acres of state land in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, a forested area of coastal plain that stretches more than one million acres.

The fire sparked Saturday afternoon and smoke and haze was being experienced as far north as Passaic County Sunday. In Lakewood, many people reported seeing ash.

There were some voluntary evacuations Saturday night, but officials say no other evacuations are necessary at this time.

Officials say no one has been hurt and no structures have been burned.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
