Updated: ‘Indian Houdini’ found dead after stunt

Update: Lahiri body has been recovered.

Chanchal Lahiri, who is also known by the stage name Wizard Mandrake, who tried Houdini style stunts, jumped into the Hooghly River in India on Sunday while tied up with rope and steel chains. He never emerged.

Before the plunge, he was asked by a local photographer why he risked his life for magic.

Lahiri responded, according to the BBC: “If I can free myself it will be magic, if I cannot, it will be tragic.”

His body has not been recovered so local authorities refuse to declare him dead. Police said a stuntman isn’t dead until he is proven dead.
