GL Exclusive: Mayor Ducey Clarifies His Response

As reported on GreaterLakewood, a Brick resident Matt Simpson, took to Twitter to ask Brick Township’s mayor Ducey to close the town’s parks to Jews! Mayor Ducey responded, “our parks security has started already, just call police with any problems and they will send them out.”

The Mayor told GreaterLakewood the word them – in the tweet below, refers to Park security – not Jews.

There was a lot of back and forth as you can see in the screenshots below:

Mayor Ducey told GreaterLakewood, the reason he did not call out the anti-Semitic tweet, was because “I did not want to acknowledge the bigotry as that would give credence to his position and the power on the topic.”

Mayor Ducey was avoiding the nastiness of the tweet and deferred it by saying “Basically if there was a problem of some type the park’s security should be advised. To get them to the specific problem he should call the police as they contact them. No call was made because of course there was no problem. Within moments he turned his anger towards me and the laws.”

Mayor Ducey added, “This was my intent because as an elected official I signed up for the “heat”. Get the anger towards me rather than the targeted group. I was successful in doing this but in doing so there was a larger picture that did not understand the “them” in my tweet was park security, not people. I’m sorry for not making that clearer.”

Mayor Ducey concluded “Anti-Semitism is wrong and there is no place for it in Brick. Hopefully, people will look to their goodness or the goodness of others before making hateful thoughts reality.”

It is important to note, Mayor Ducey is extremely responsive on Twitter to all requests – from all people. Imagine if other Township Mayors were as available to answer questions from ‘we the people’.

Stay involved – Here is how

  1. Firstly, Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles has an Ask the Mayor column on the Lakewood Scoop where you can sen requests which he always responds to.
Secondly, Mayor Ducey looks like Trump 🙂

  2. Yes, I understood the mayor’s words (specifically the word “them”) to be referring to park security.
I was appalled that it was thought to mean something else.
At the very least he should have been given the benefit of the the doubt.
Thank you Mr. Mayor for everything you do.
    A Lakewood resident since 1986
